YAPA — New Morning, Paris, France

Project Description

First formed in Paris, Yapa’s three guitarists and percussionist consider travelling the world an indispensable source of inspiration for their music.

Their latest album “Archipel” was heavily influenced by recent tours in French Polynesia and Great Britain and follows Pariwaga and Wagamumbai, recorded in Burkina Faso and India respectively.

After several months of independent composition, arrangement and rehearsal work, YAPA recorded “Archipel” at le Studio de Meudon, France in January 2016.

These recording sessions reveal a strong creative group dynamic and brings a fresh, spontaneous sound to the recording, faithfully rendered by the L‑ISA BluBubbles 23:1 format.

Sound Design Solution

The concert took place on October 19th, 2017 at Le New Morning, the iconic Parisian Jazz club (400 capacity). The permanently installed sound system was bypassed.

Instead, Yapa deployed an L‑ISA wide design solution Scene system with five speaker groups of Syva and Syva Low located behind the musicians, across the stage.

Two groups of Syva and Syva Low were used as extensions and four speaker group of one Syva spaced around audience to provide immersion. Four Syva SUB were positioned close to the center scene speaker.

This implementation principle, delivered outstanding results for both musicians and audience: each of the five Syva scene speakers was located behind one musician, acting both as a stage monitor and as an emulating sound source.

The performance was transcribed with an unprecedented level of detail, transparency, reconnecting the audience to what was seen on stage and heard in the room.

As a member of the L-Acoustics sound system design team I had the great opportunity to follow the development of Syva in L‑ISA applications with my band Yapa.

It began on October 5, 2014 with the use of mockups of Syva sound system and L‑ISA Processor during a discrete gig in Paris. This show helped us define the shape of the waveguide to improve the system throw capability as well as validate the outstanding potential of L‑ISA Live installations.

Three years later we have done it again for the release of our new album “Archipel” and I am delighted to be the witness of the work done by the L‑Group teams : Syva system, L‑ISA processor and controller as well as AVB digital audio technology used for a music recorded under the BluBubbles BluSpace specifications.

I look forward to seeing these solutions used widely to push live sound to another level of quality that meets public expectations.
